More than 60 percent of large corporations use pre-employment assessments as part of their hiring processes – and in most cases, candidates who fail are eliminated from contention for a job.
Pre-employment screenings generally consist of personality, behavioral and/or aptitude tests. Additional testing may center on logic, math, mechanical abilities, grammar and spelling. For the first three areas, there often are no right or wrong answers; rather, they provide an employer with a better understanding of your preferences, personality type, strengths and weaknesses.
- Personality tests are used to identify specific character traits and to determine whether you’d be a good fit for a role, get along well with coworkers, and mesh with company culture.
- Behavioral tests demonstrate how you act and react in specific situations, as well as providing an additional measure of your sociability on the job.

How to Excel
The way you handle employment screening tests can make or break your chances of landing your dream job. Here are some tips to help ensure your success:
- Find out as much information as possible in advance. Ask what types of tests will be administered and how long testing will take. Try and learn how tests will be given; for instance, in person, by phone or online. Search the company’s name plus “assessment test questions” to see if any information is posted.
- Request information about how your test results will be used. Also, ask how well you must do in order to be considered for a position.
- Take some practice tests. A number of tests can be found online at no charge. Taking pre-tests gives you the opportunity to read sample questions and answers. Though your actual questions may not be exactly the same as those on practice runs, this will help calm your nerves and provide a general idea of what to expect.
- Answer questions honestly and consistently. You’re better off giving an honest assessment of yourself than manipulating your way into a job that’s not the right fit.
- Be confident. Believe in yourself that you can and will pass the assessment, no matter how nervous it makes you feel.
- Make sure the job is really what you want. This is important to both you and the employer. Be open and if there’s a feedback form, fill it out.
- Follow up afterwards. Ask the hiring manager how you did. Be open to feedback and constructive criticism. Consider how you could respond better if tested in the future for a different position.
- Think positive! Remember the reasons you’re applying for this job, and let your passion and enthusiasm show.
